The expansion will be executed in multiple phases and is slated for completion in August 2013.
The project will add area to the earlier social spaces of the center. The meeting space of the center will be expanded from 6000 square feet to over 13,800 square feet. The ballroom of the facility will be expanded by about 30% facilitating it to host large events. As a part of this project an outdoor stage will also be built. The lounge of the center will also be expanded and will sprawl over 11,500 square feet post renovation. The building will have new entrances on the North and West end, and the East end will feature a new entrance plaza.
The project will be compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. In compliance with the guidelines, the center will have ADA accessible elevators, restrooms, doorways, signage, entrances, passage way and food service areas.
The project will also upgrade the technology of the building. The mechanical systems will be upgraded to make them more energy efficient. The building will also have a new air conditioning and heating system.
Apart from the old offices, the new building will have offices for Alumni Association and Multicultural Affairs. The project will be funded by an increase in the tution fees of the students over the next 15-20 years as the state of Kansas does not provide financial assistance in any form for expansion or renovation of students’ union building.
