The new centre, positioned on the hospital’s third storey, features 16 large private labour-delivery and recovery suites, five triage rooms, and four prolonged observation rooms. Among its various other features are a maternal intensive monitoring bay, as well as an obstetric post-surgical recovery zone.
A total of five operating rooms and one fetal surgery room support the facilities. In addition, the same floor of the building also houses the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of UTMB which facilitates high-risk maternity patients.
Construction of the new centre, financed through Sealy & Smith Foundation, forms part of a $36 million John Sealy Hospital Modernization Project. The project also involves upgrades to two medical-surgical wings, the Blocker Burn Unit, the pediatric intensive care wing, and hospital infrastructure.
