The facilities at the new 23-storey hospital include private rooms with home-like amenities, a 45-bed trauma centre, Kenneth and Anne Griffin Emergency Care Center, the 5000 square feet Crown Sky Garden, and unique patient and family activity and respite area. The new hospital offers dedicated areas for conducting research.
The hospital features creative and healing interior designs, which consist of life-size sculptures of a humpback whale and baby in the lobby. The elevators have interactive art, such car images and buttons to push to make the horns honk. The hospital also has a wheelchair-accessible, scaled-down fire truck for kids to play.
The green credentials of the building include a 13,039 square feet roof garden with storm water management techniques that reclaim almost 90% of the run-off storm water. The exteriors are done up in light colors, which reduces heating effect.
The hospital has water efficient fixtures, which reduce water consumption by almost 20%. The specifically designed ventilation system of the building reduces energy consumption of the building. The building has low emitting adhesives, sealants, paints, coating and carpets.
During construction, almost 50% of the demolition and non-hazardous construction materials were recycled and reused. About 10% of all the building material consists of recycled materials. Lurie Children’s Hospital is aspiring for LEED certification from the US Green Building Council.
