Sprawling over a 60-hectares site, the pipeline stadium will be a new FIFA and Olympic grade stadium which will have a maximum seating capacity of 60,000 spectators. The new stadium is likely to contribute to the cultural landscape of Ethiopia.

The design of the stadium follows the traditional stadium design pattern and will boast a crater-like form. The pitch will be located below ground level, enclosed by the grandstands formed from the excavated material. The crater like formation refers to the volcanic landscape of Ethiopia.

The facade of the stadium will be modeled on the massob, a basket woven art of the country using grass. It will also sport coffee beans-like patterns. These further reveal influence of local Ethiopian culture on the stadium’s design. The stadium will have an intelligent membrane roof, which will aid in keeping it cool.

Construction of the stadium is scheduled to commence in 2014.
