The new school is a single-storey, split-level building, which encompasses an area of 2,600 square metre. It has been developed at the site of playing fields of the existing school. The project involved the demolition of the old primary school and construction of a new building, along with new access from Mead Way and Bushey Mill Lane and parking on the playing fields at the nearby existing school.
The site of the demolished school has been converted into a playing fields. The roof of the building features solar panels, which generate green power to fuel certain power requirements of the school. The scheme also includes a Children’s Centre which shares its entrance with the school. The new school has a capacity of 420 pupils plus 30 nursery pupils and six in the Pupil Support Base.
The project is set to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ through the responsible sourcing of materials, recycling and using local suppliers wherever possible. The building features E-stack window and roof terminals, which offers assisted natural ventilation. To cut back the cost on air conditioning, the building is well insulated. To reduce energy consumption, the building has employed energy-efficient systems such as high efficiency lighting, variable speed drives and high efficiency air source heat pumps, renewable solutions including pvs and solar thermal hot water system, water-efficient sanitary fittings and rain water harvesting system.
The school also features flexible internal space using sliding/folding partitions within year group classroom clusters and between assembly hall and dining.
The new school, which has been built on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council, was part of the Government’s Primary Capital Programme to replace schools in poor condition.
