Spread over 1,100 hectares featuring idyllic hillside, vineyards, olive groves and scattered dwellings, the renovation project is aimed at restoring the destination to its former glory.
Maintaining the Tuscan elements of the existing structures was the prime focus of the project. The first residential offering includes La Terrazza 1 and La Ghialla buildings, which are set to complete in summer 2013. These apartment buildings are situated in the estate’s central borgo. Both La Terrazza 1 and La Ghialla buildings date back 300 years, hence the strengthening of the structural core was essential. The restoration team has removed the original slate tiles found on the roof of La Ghialla and laid a new, modernised roof, complete with insulation and weather protection.
Exposed wooden beams which are synonymous with rustic Italian style were an integral part of Castelfalfi’s character. To add to the safety of the properties, the team has replicated their appearance and age by sourcing chestnut timbers from central Italy. Within the estate’s inaugural hotel, La Tabaccaia, the original beams were salvaged and preserved, adding an authentic touch to the 31 guest rooms. The beautifully stained wood ages back to the building’s time as a tobacco factory.
Eighteen Italian farmhouses, or casali, were found on the wider estate and in the picturesque hills surrounding the borgo, in varying stages of decline. These properties offer panoramic views of the Tuscan landscape, and would be resurrected as luxury homes according to each buyer’s specific tastes. Four of these properties are currently being renovated. Skilled Venetian and Florentine craftsmen who specialise in this intricate process have been brought on board and are now replacing each original stone.
