Mormon church is seeking a LEED–Silver certification for its innovative design and green features integrated into the library building.

The new 230,000 square feet library features air filters that purge allergens, an efficient heating and cooling system, a plumbing system that uses less water and wood fixtures built from forests that are replanted after harvest. The officials are expecting reduced electricity costs as a result of the energy efficient fixtures.

The church has been integrating green building principles into the designs for meeting houses, temples and other facilities for quite some time, says Dean Davies, the church’s managing director of physical facilities.

The new green facility will be open to the public from June 20, 2009.
