In 2002, developer Phil Tagami of California Capital Group began the renovation process of the theater, designed by architect Jim Heilbronner of Architectural Dimensions.

The $75 million project was funded by the City of Oakland along with grants from private donors, including Bank of America. The Fox also houses the Oakland School of the Arts, a charter high school, and a restaurant space that does not have a tenant yet.

In the coming months, the theater will host acts such as the Moody Blues, Cake, Franz Ferdinand, BB King and Bloc Party.

Thomas Schnetz, co-owner of neighboring restaurant Flora, said, “We’ve been waiting for this for a long time. Anytime you have the addition of a beautiful landmark, it’s a great thing.
