The new centre transformed the El Pomar Sports Center over the past two years. As part of the renovation, 119, 091 square feet of area was added to the original structure that opened in 1970.
The fitness centre features the 3,500-square-feet Smith Cardio Center with more than 50 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, AMTs, stationary bikes, rowing machines, summit trainers, and stair climbers.
The centre also features a 4,500 square feet strength training room featuring Olympic lifting racks, dumbbells, 12 pieces of selectorized strength-training equipment, additional cardiovascular equipment, a dedicated TRX training area, and spaces for medicine balls, exercise balls and flexibility training.
A 1,000-square-feet Louis Multipurpose Room, a group exercise studio for yoga and other fitness classes are other features of the new fitness centre. In addition, a recreational gym for open basketball and volleyball, intramurals and varsity sports, one squash court, and one convertible squash/racquetball court are also available at the centre.
A 27-foot high Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym, featuring 3,500 square feet of climbing surface; 24 rope stations; bouldering caves; natural cracks; a chimney/off-width area; seven locker rooms, including men’s and women’s faculty/staff locker rooms, men’s and women’s student locker rooms, auxiliary locker rooms and a single-use locker room are additional elements of Adam F. Press Fitness Center.
Press provided $3.5 million towards the fitness centre, while around $8.5 million was donated by the El Pomar Foundation. CC Board of Trustees approved renovation of El Pomar Sports Center and construction to include additional offices, classroom space and a new fitness centre in May 2011.
