Aedas’ innovative design for the Kirkby Sports College, as part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) program, features outdoor spaces within the building envelope to enhance the indoor-outdoor teaching and learning experience.
The judges commended the way in which the education and sporting vision are achieved. The school boasts excellent sporting facilities that are an integral focus of the life of the school with a link between the internal and external spaces. The facility features an outdoor 400m synthetic running track, a full size all-weather pitch and a covered multi-use games area integrated into the fabric of the building. Officials are planning to co-locate one of the largest special educational needs (SEN) schools in the country, which will develop additional disabled sports facilities provision within the UK.
The interior design of the school building highlights Olympic and Paralympic values. The house bases are named after some of the greatest Olympians as a source of inspiration to the students. Aedas has created an engaging teaching and learning environment to develop the sports specialism and offers an exciting and accessible community sporting facility.
This latest recognition to Aedas follows an award for ‘Most Inspirational School Design’ for Christ the King Learning Centre in Knowsley in 2009.
The BCSE awards ceremony was held on June 24, 2010 in South London.
