Dubbed as The Dome or the Thrillerdome, the 54-year-old Alexander Memorial Coliseum’s renovation will gut the entire structure, except the dome. The replacement facility of Georgia Tech, which will be designed by Kansas City-based architecture firm Populous, will retain the roof and a few existing components. The seating bowl and concessions will be refitted extensively.
The seating capacity of the improved stadium will not be altered much, as it would necessitate additional parking spaces. Sightlines, scoreboards and seating around the floor, will be changed significantly.
The Coliseum is located just next to the Downtown Connector, Atlanta’s major Interstate thoroughfare.
