In January 2010, a selection committee tentatively chose a winner from three design-build teams bidding to handle major renovations to Cheney Stadium. The review panel selected a bid proposed by Mortenson Construction and its partner team of architects. But the claim by a competing bidder that the selection process was potentially tainted has brought the project to a standstill.
The renovation project forms a part of the city’s planned $30 million overhaul of the ballpark. The teams who submitted the proposals are Mortenson Construction with Belay Architecture and Populous; Turner Construction with Ellerbe Becket and TCF Architecture; and Wade Perrow Construction and Barton Malow Company with HKS. These three teams of finalists were selected from a larger pool that submitted initial concept proposals in 2009.
The design teams were required to design a new ballpark superstructure, clubhouse, locker rooms, business suites, a public meeting room, concession areas, and restrooms.
