The Anacostia library sports various eco-friendly features. Its design allows optimum passage of natural light inside, thereby reaping energy cost cuts. The lighting system installed in the building run low on energy usage.
The restrooms of the facility have been equipped with low-flow automatic faucets, air hand dryers and low-flow toilets which reduce water consumption. The library also incorporates a retention pond which further leads to water savings by cutting down the rate of storm water runoff into the Anacostia River. Other sustainable features of the facility include use of reclaimed materials in flooring, countertops and wood finishes. Presence of bike racks boosts the green initiative.
The Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library too comprises several sustainable elements. Its includes a vegetative green roof which absorbs and releases water into the sewage system of the city. This helps slash the raw sewage level flowing into rivers and hence, reduces possibilities of floods during heavy rain. The roof further decreases the amount of ultraviolet radiation in the facility.
