Design: Nuca Studio

The Rock bar and nightclub and the Loft restaurant can be found in the Silver Mountain resort in Poiana Brasov, a ski destination near Bucharest. Their interiors were the work of Romanian architecture and interiors firm Nuca Studio.

The brief for these projects called for a tourist experience to remember and so Nuca Studio worked to create a holiday destination as well as a concept to suit this picturesque resort, high in the mountains above Romania’s capital.

At the Rock, natural materials such as wood and stone are complemented by solid surface material Hi-MAcS. The bar’s top uses the Lucent range of the material, while the translucent surface is illuminated by LEDs, allowing for some particularly spectacular lighting effects.

The thermoforming property of Hi-MAcS means the bar’s four corners are moulded into a gentle curve for a seamless effect. The metal structure that supports the bar can be seen as a shadow through the counter top while the front is a curved MDF veneer painted with water-based paint for a highly resistant yet environmentally friendly finish.

The focal point of the Loft restaurant, meanwhile, is also the bar, also of Hi-MAcS. The translucent opal bar top is engraved on the inside with the resort’s logo, which is then illuminated with LEDs, providing a visual impact by contrasting the materials. The bar top is sheer and fluid thanks to the invisible joins, and sits on rustic-looking, stacked square wood beams. As well as looking good, the end result is also highly durable.

Nuca Studio has somewhat cornered the market in contemporary contract interiors in its homeland. it has worked on phill, an innovative cafe concept in Bucharest. Here customers can leave their children to play in a 4m-high model elephant while they dine, either in the small cafe on the ground floor or in a restaurant on the second level.

The practice also did Sheltered, which opened last year in Bucharest at Pavilion, an art and culture centre. The intention is to encourage visitors to recognise and confront the basics of personal space.

Those heading to Piatra Neamt in the north-east of the country, meanwhile, will be greeted by a wealth of wood in the restaurant noir. The interior features wooden tables and wall panelling, referencing the area’s natural beauty: its mountains and forests.

For the Rock and Loft projects, Nuca Studio has again cleverly taken its cues from nature and added a quintessential layer of luxury to proceedings.
