The GBP8 million ($11.5 million approx) extension and refurbishment scheme demanded a ‘sensitive response’, as the site is located adjacent to the former village green. Some elements of the school that have been retained include the existing ‘doughnut’ of accommodations and classrooms that are arranged around a sequence of external courtyards.
The central courtyard has been roofed to provide a flexible space for the users at the heart of the school. Archial has incorporated a new gym and dining hall within the extension wing. The space is designed as a flexible area to allow it to be used as a single room as the need arises. This space is encircled by secondary facilities such as staff areas, kitchen and medical suites. In this way, the refurbished wing focuses more on pupil activity, while community activities take place in the extension. Between the refurbished wing and extended wing, a new entry point has been inserted.
Mauchline Primary School is part of the GBP70 million ($100.7 million approx) East Ayrshire Schools Public Private Partnership (PPP) project. PPP is a key element in the Scottish Government’s strategy for delivering modern high quality schools.
