The new permanent home of Atlanta Ballet located on Marietta Boulevard, is housed in a 54,000 square feet abandoned warehouse built in the 1950s that has been renovated and converted into a LEED-certified facility. The building utilizes all recycled carpeting and contains areas dedicated for recycling used materials. The materials used in the construction process contain high recycled content and were purchased from local and regional distributors.
The new Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre is double the size of Atlanta Ballet’s present home in West Peachtree Street. The facility has been designed to serve as a unique resource for the not-for-profit performing arts community, offering special event, rehearsal and performance space.
The building is installed with energy-efficient lighting, recycled carpet, donated office furniture, dual flush toilets, and low-flow faucets and shower heads. About 98% of all construction waste was recycled and diverted from landfills. Even the rocks from the renovation were donated to Zoo Atlanta. All these sustainable efforts have helped it to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-Gold certification.
The new HQ also houses the Centre for Dance Education to serve thousands of students and features special amenities such as, private dressing and locker rooms, and a student library. The Atlanta Ballet is also planning to open a 200-seat black box theater.
Atlanta Ballet will officially raise the curtain on its new headquarters on August 14, 2010.
