The expansion would result in increasing the airport’s capacity to 15 million passengers annually. Part of this expansion project includes the construction of three new terminals, each of which are slated to handle 2.5 million passengers every year.
The airport currently sports three terminals which are to undergo renovations too and the project would be funded by foreign investors.
The airport is stated to be the largest in Iraq and is located in a suburb about 16 kilometers (10 miles) west of downtown Baghdad in the Baghdad Governorate. It is the home base for Iraq’s national airline, Iraqi Airways.
