The markets, which is among the largest composite wholesale markets in Britain, became notable for the huge range of food articles that is sold to the city’s ethnically diverse restaurant chains.

The proposed 654,950 square feet new markets will retain the vibrancy in the new setting and is expected to increase their popularity and catchments.

BDP plans to design the facility as an iconic structure along with being functionally efficient, food safe and flexible.

The new site will re-house more than 80 wholesale businesses into a new covered market, and will augment these with business incubation units to serve new food sector segments and the ever growing public interest in organic produce with low food miles.

Passive low energy design and active systems will be reinforced by renewable energy production. Food waste will be recycled to produce green energy, supporting the facility’s wider sustainable credentials.

The relocation of the markets, which has been given go ahead by Birmingham City Council, has become one of the UK’s biggest urban regeneration opportunities.
