The school, originally constructed in 1961, spans 200,000 square feet. The project will be carried out in nine phases. The sixth phase includes overhaul of the Steve White gym, the old girls locker room, the old library and the 1971 classrooms. The classrooms will now be equipped with larger desks and contoured chairs and will comprise whiteboards replacing the chalkboards. The other elements to be upgraded as part of the project include the existing science labs as well as restrooms. The improved labs will incorporate advanced lab equipment and latest technology such as a shower and eye-wash area in the chemistry lab, new height adjustable-lab chairs and goggles cleaned with UV rays as reported in the Sun Chronicle.
The revamped building will feature a new entrance. Work will also involve installing advanced heating, ventilation and power systems in the building. The facility will further enable easy access for the disabled while its offices, classrooms and library will be fitted with updated technology including wireless internet service.
A host of new security systems will be employed in the renovated facility like keyless entrance, surveillance cameras and a main office featuring windows onto the new entrance and lobby. Staff members will be provided electronic pass cards for gaining entry.
The two upgraded gymnasiums of the school will be equipped with new scoreboards and bleachers while there will be dedicated locker rooms for athletes. The facility will also house new music rooms, new locker room for girls with full-size lockers and showers as well as highly-efficient water fountains following the facelift. In addition, there will be a courtyard to separate different classrooms. The courtyard will be adorned with some tables and will feature 50 plant species.
The rest of the three phases will improve the remaining portion of the science labs, the lecture hall situated on the first level, Tiger Gym, the cafeteria, kitchen and industrial and art classrooms. The last phase will phase out portable classrooms and develop the landscaping.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of August 2012.
