A full Remmers refurbishment flooring system has been installed by specialists IRL Group, to completely replace and upgrade the floors of four blocks of washrooms and toilet facilities at the Caterpillar factory in Manchester. The work was carried out as part of a major refurbishment and upgrading of the facility by main contractors Vision Interiors Limited.

IRL firstly removed the existing deteriorated quarry tiled floors with unhygienic joints, together with all of the old bedding and grouting residues, back to the sound substrate of the original good quality base concrete floor slab. The concrete floors were then brought up to the required newly created finished levels and drainage falls, using Remmers Optiplan pumped screed. This is a polymer modified, cement based levelling system applied at 6-10mm thickness. This was impregnated and sealed with Remmers broadcast 2mm flake system, which is based on advanced epoxy resins and fully encapsulated decorative plastic flakes. Finally the top coating of Remmers UV 100 highly resistant epoxy finish was applied.

This cost effective Remmers system provides an extremely hard wearing, hygienic and easily cleaned seamless surface, which is also chemically resistant and watertight. It has a light and colour fast decorative finish that will retain its appearance for many years.

An important additional requirement during the refurbishment of this busy factory and distribution centre, was to maintain continuous operation of the facilities and to minimise any disruption to the staff or the Company’s operations. To assist the client and the main contractor with this objective, IRL developed a programme whereby they closed only one block at a time and then actually carried out all of the works ‘out of hours’, in the evenings and at weekends.
