Many showrooms and exhibitors are showcasing lighting products at CDW, lighting. Daren Newton, Festival Director of Clerkenwell Design Week comments: “Light is a key element in any space; it can be used to create mood, define space and highlight features. Furthermore, lighting designs are usually the frontrunners of aesthetic trends; their smaller components are faster to develop, manufacture and ship so there is enormous pace and variety.”
The Victorian Farmiloe Building provides a backdrop to CDW’s international exhibitors of contemporary design. The third floor will offer an emporium of established and emerging lighting brands. Italian lighting company Foscarini has announced their first ever participation at CDW, taking over the Farmiloe’s Atrium and Tunnel with an installation showcasing some of the company’s best products. The Atrium space will host Foscarini Evolution, a large-scale installation honouring the brand’s ability to create site-specific exhibitions that appeal to both specialist and public viewers.
With a first-of-its kind display at the Farmiloe Building’s window, Italian manufacturer Artemide has curated an installation featuring IN-EI, a collection of sculptural lights conceived in collaboration with Issey Miyake and his research and development team Reality Lab. The pieces were developed using a mathematical program with 3-D geometric principals, combining creativity and mathematics. Made entirely of recycled PET, the lightshades are both statuesque and delicate, keeping their shape without the need for an internal frame.
Classic and contemporary fixtures and fittings specialist, Holloways of Ludlow are showcasing a range of exclusive lighting as well as new collections from around the world. These include colourful array of the iconic French Jielde lighting collection, comprising desk, floor, wall and ceiling lights.
Eco-friendly lighting designs from New Zealand-based designer David Trubridge will be displayed at CDW, including his well-known Coral Light, inspired by his underwater experiences. Holloways of Ludlow own-brand, Old School Electric will also showcase a range of British spun-steel shades and a collection of blown-glass pendants.
Joining CDW for the first time, Luminosity will present three versatile ranges of sculptural pendant shades; Banksia, Rosa, and the now iconic Aperture. Established in 2011 by lighting designer Claire Norcross, the company combines the aesthetic qualities of their specially selected papers with inspiration from natural geometry.
MacMaster is presenting their Bloom pendant light as well as a trio of new pendant lights at the festival. All pieces are designed in the MacMaster studio and then hand-crafted in their rural Worcestershire production workshop.
Swedish manufacturer Örsjö will launch new lighting products Star and Vinge alongside their existing Crane light. In 2008 Örsjö was the first company to be awarded the Nordic Swan eco-label for a lighting product and their collaborations include some of Scandinavia’s leading designers, such as Matti Klenell, Claesson Koivisto Rune and Note Design Studio. All production, from components to finished products, is carried out at the company’s plant in the small town of Örsjö in Sweden.
Spanish company Estiluz will present a full range of its products. Founded by Gerard Masdeu Jordà in 1969 as a small workshop in the province of Girona in Spain, Estiluz is involved in design, development, manufacturing and the distribution of high-range decorative lighting.
Danish lighting specialist, Lightyears will exhibit their latest pendants and wall lights. Amongst these will be Pharoah, developed in collaboration with English design company, Hulger. When the lamp is switched off, the shade appears to be mirror-like, reflective and robust. When it is switched on, the shade takes on a metallic transparency, making the light source visible.
British furniture manufacturer, MARK will present their Ribbon Trio Lights as part of their celebrated range of furniture designed for home, work and leisure. Under the creative direction of Anna Hart and John Miller, each MARK product is both practical and sustainable, combining years of experience in design, manufacture and innovation.
Helsinki-based design company Showroom Finland will be showcasing their popular Pike lights alongside their furniture and accessory collections. The company markets high quality Skandinavian design products with a focus on function, form and quality.
Based in the heart of London’s East End, Vitamin will also showcase its products which span furniture, lighting, ceramics and homeware. Each of its designs is mixed with a little fun and originality.
Magnus Pettersen Studio is exhibiting for the first time at CDW 2013. Norwegian-born and based in London, Petterson’s work spans furniture, home accessories and lighting inspired by Nordic aesthetics. CDW will see the launch of Beacon, a decorative table lamp inspired by lighthouses and made from a combination of spun anodized aluminium with a cast brass base.
Newcomer James Smith Designs Ltd. will present the experimental Glade floor lamp, hand crafted in the UK and inspired by the natural complexity found in plant life. Showcasing for the first time, Glade is the latest in a developing series that explores the manipulation of light and shadow.
Newcastle-based design studio and workshop Deadgood will be showcasing new wall and table lights as a range extension of the EXTL ceiling light. Each light is manufactured using a single length of three-millimetre thick aluminium and then finished with an anodised lustre.
Hand & Eye design studio showcases its unique lighting products. Set up by practicing architect Tom Housden in 2011, the company aims to reconnect the designer with the physical process of making. Scandinavian design store Muuto returns for a fourth year at CDW, presenting new lighting designs, such as the Wood Lamp, and a range of handpicked quality furniture and lighting by the finest design talent in Scandinavia.
