On June 7, 2006, plans were announced to replace the aging Terminal B with a brand new terminal. The $1.1 billion project, dubbed the Big Build, will undertake construction and renovation of more than 670,000 square feet, making it Sacramento County’s largest public construction project to date.

The new 19-gate airside concourse is constructed to replace the 40-year-old Terminal B. The airside concourse features international arrivals facilities, passenger security checkpoints, an in-line baggage screening system, more than 42,000 square feet of concessions, and an elevated people-mover system to connect the concourse to the terminal.

The architects and designers have tried to update and expand the terminal in such a way that it reflects local culture and fits perfectly into the setting. The vaulted three-story, glass-walled structure is designed to offer panoramic views on three sides. Unobstructed views across the ticketing hall provide a visual connection to the central circulation spine. This is designed to facilitate way-finding and connect the interiors with views to the outdoors.

The design team has also integrated sustainable strategies in order to earn US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-Silver certification. Solar shading devices are integrated in the curtain-wall; low-energy glass, recycled materials, low-flow fixtures, and natural ventilation are used wherever possible.

Ground was broken on June 2008 to begin preliminary work on the new terminal which is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2011.
