London-based architectural firm Watkins Gray International has designed the Deptford Green School redevelopment project for Uk-based engineering and construction group Costain and the Learning 21 LEP – a joint venture between Costain and UK-based engineering support services company Babcock as part of Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. Financial close has been reached for the financing, design and construction of the redeveloped Deptford Green School.
Deptford Green School will undergo a multi-million pound transformation, including a brand-new school building next to Fordham Park, providing a 21st century learning environment and state-of-the-art community facilities. The current Upper School site will be redeveloped to provide a new public space and new homes.
The £27 million ($41.6 million) new build project is part of Lewisham’s BSF programme. The new 11,600 square metre school will be designed to accommodate 1300 pupils. The facility will also provide space for the accommodation of 25 children with dyslexia. The new building will replace an existing three-storey Victorian school building.
The new structure will feature larger than standard classrooms displaying flexible teaching formats; majority of teaching spaces arranged into four distinct learning zones catering to different student age groups; and a dining area, designed to be a part of the central social and circulation space.
The school will be fitted with energy efficient systems and installations. This includes solar shading to windows, high levels of thermal insulation, and use of energy recovery systems, with heating provided by a bio-mass boiler. The design is targeting BREEAM-Excellent rating.
London Borough of Lewisham has granted planning consent in early 2010, and the school is expected to be completed by July 2012.
