The museum covering an area of 340,000 square feet resembles the form of a chiseled rock. Its design has been inspired by Mada’in Saleh which is an ancient city comprising rock-cut architecture, and At-Turaif which is a 15th-century complex made of adobe. The building will be laden in prismatic laminated glass panels. The lower levels of the building will don a transparent look with its upper levels being opaque in appearance.

The facility will accommodate galleries for permanent as well as temporary exhibitions, an auditorium with a capacity of 150, a monorail station, a network of skywalks along with a restaurant.

Site excavation work on the project has already commenced with work expected to complete by 2012.
