Miami-based developer of the Lil Abner apartments, Consolidated Real Estate Investment, required homes for senior citizens that were designed on green principles and hired the LEED for Homes Provider, E3 Building Sciences, to take forward the process of certification of the 87-unit residential development. Burgos Lanza Architects & Planners of Miami have provided the initial design of the building located at 11239 NW 4th Terrace in Miami.

Each of the units is slated to measure 610 square feet and 839 square feet in size and would overlook courtyards. The units are also located in close proximity to the elevators.

The apartments would be energy efficient and would be designed to provide better indoor air quality than senior housing built to existing building codes. The building is said to be at least 14% more energy efficient than buildings built to the ASHRAE 90.1 Standard, a national commercial building benchmark for improved energy consumption in buildings. The units will also be energy and water efficient.

The Lil Abner would feature amenities such as a pool, gazebo and cabana on the 4.65 acre site.

The project is slated to break ground in 2010 and aims at achieving the LEED Silver Certification.
