New York-based full-service construction manager and general contractor Welliver McGuire inc. is leading the renovation project. The historical building that contains structural oddities such as suspended floors will require structural works such as selective demolition and reinforcement to comply with modern fire and safety codes.
The remodeling project will significantly change the interior structure of Cowles Hall, retaining the original exterior of the building. According to Elmira College’s director of public relations Mike Rogers, the objective of the project was to transform the historic building into a safe and functional facility, without tampering its historic feel.
The remodeling team has selected materials for their longevity, including hardwood flooring and limestone. The renovated Cowles Hall will include amenities such as air conditioning and updated plumbing and lighting.
The $29 million Cowles Hall renovation scheme is expected to be completed by 2012.
The 1855-built Cowles Hall, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was originally used as the central building of the campus in the late 19th century.
