The 18.3 acre Dan Kinney Park will feature the department’s first modern universal design playground. The playground will be equipped with play elements such as bongo drums, elevated platforms, draw bridges, balancing apparatus, upper and lower body exercising elements, rock climbing wall, periscope and tube slides. All these elements constitute Phase I improvements.
The board is planning to undertake some future improvements at the park, which includes creation of the Dan Kinney Family Center as part of Phase II. The Rotary Club of Springfield North, in partnership with the Park Board and other donors, will build ‘Miracle Field’ at the park. The field will be designed to feature a special playing surface allowing easy access for wheelchair users, individuals using walkers and anyone who has health issues.
The Phase III of the scheme will create an Aquatics Center at Dan Kinney Park. An in-park paved walking trail spans around the park. The park will remain open during these improvements.
The park is named after a retired director of Parks Dan Kinney, one of the only three to hold this position in its 97-year history.
