The new Franklin Woods Community Hospital is one of the three environmentally-friendly hospitals planned by Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA). The hospital is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
Karlsberger has designed the facility, located in 135-acre Med Tech Park in Johnson City, by blending high-tech and natural design features. Rock formations are utilized to take advantage of natural water flows. Trees are incorporated in the facility with large amounts of glass offering an illusion of being outdoors to everyone inside the facility.
The hospital features cork floors, wooden beams, and panoramic views of the nearby Smokey Mountains. The hospital campus is installed with an extensive underground system that funnels runoff water into retention ponds to reduce the environmental impact.
Respecting the original character of the site, Franklin Woods Community Hospital is integrated into the landscape, framing exterior spaces and views of the surrounding trees and mountains. Each patient room has either a view of the mountains or a view of the forest. Collectively, these attributes deliver an evidence-based healing environment.
