The state government will invest $22 million to redevelop the most significant and intact wool store remaining in WA. The $11 million first stage will be led by Australian builder Diploma Group, who has been appointed by boutique developer Match.
The development is part of a project to build 241 apartments on the site. The apartments will be spread over two buildings, each containing five storeys, with communal space separating the two.
The Department of Housing’s 58 apartments will be located on 1,846 square metres of cleared land added to the main wool store building. In addition to apartments, recreation and car parking facilities, a new five-storey building fronting Beach Street, and two additional floors over part of the main Wool Stores structure will be constructed.
The first stage of construction is expected to be completed by December 2011.
The 1922-built Dalgety Wool Store, also known as the Fort Knox building, is located between Beach and Queen Victoria streets. It was later extended by Dalgety and Sons for the store of wool for auction.
