The new terminal at Pulkovo Airport features a striking undulating roof and envelope designed to accommodate the extremes of climate experienced by the city. The roof has been created from a series of 18m bays which are shallow enough not to encourage snow gathering, and deep enough to offer an effective drainage system. The internal spaces are illuminated by light reflectors in the roof.
Grimshaw Architects has designed the internal layout of the new terminal by integrating well-defined and separate zones that are linked by individual walkways. This design reflects the external layout of islands and bridges that dominate the city. The grand internal spaces resonate with many civic spaces and references commonly found in St. Petersburg. The same design element has been carried onto the Airport City master plan. Sculpture-lined Boulevard forms the airport gateway, reminiscent of St.Perterburg’s Grand Avenue.
Grimshaw Architects is working in collaboration with the UK-based architectural and engineering practice Ramboll and London-based transport architect Pascall+Watson. Ground-breaking for the project is scheduled for 26 June, 2010 and the terminal is expected to be functional from 2013.
Grimshaw Architects is an architectural practice with offices in New York, London and Australia.
