The giant aquarium built by Colorado-based Reynolds Polymer Technology (RPT) measures 12m long, 2m wide and 4m high with 230mm thick acrylic walls. The aquarium has been installed in the lobby of Heron Tower at 110 Bishopsgate, a multi-occupied office building, which will provide world-class office space with Restaurant and Sky Bar on the top three floors.
The aquarium is considered to be the largest complete unit to be manufactured by Reynolds and is hailed as the largest privately-owned aquarium in Europe. RPT is the exclusive manufacturer, fabricator, designer, and installer of R-Cast acrylic and resin-based products.
Bridge height restrictions in London required the aquarium to be transported on its side and the unit, within a steel protective frame, was turned in Bishopsgate to its correct orientation before the frame was removed and the aquarium lifted onto air skates. The tank was then slid into the entrance lobby and lifted onto a temporary plinth where the grp rockwork and artificial coral will be installed before the whole unit is slid into its final location beneath a steel lantern.
Heron Tower, also referred to as 110 Bishopsgate, is a skyscraper under construction in London’s main financial district. Having topped out in July 2010, it stands 230 metres tall.
