EDITION is the new lifestyle boutique hotel brand developed by New York-based boutique hotelier Ian Schrager in association with Marriott International. Marriott will renovate the 1835-built Berners Hotel in partnership with Ian Schrager to make it the London EDITION.
The historic Berners Hotel originally consisted of a residential house complex, which was ultimately converted into a hotel. The layout includes a basement, ground and seven upper floors. Original architectural features, such as ornate ceilings and a marble-clad reception area make the property distinct.
The Berners Hotel is renowned for its grade II listed richly decorated original ceilings of the marble-clad lobby and restaurant, Dating from the 1830’s these historic decorative features are to be restored to their former glory, preserving their unique appearance for future generations of guests.
According to Marriott and Ian Schrager, each EDITION hotel will be stylized in a way to function as a ‘home away from home’ targeting leisure and business travellers. Functional and technologically sophisticated working environments will offer ‘office away from the office’ atmosphere to business travellers.
Each hotel, with its originality and unique ethos, will reflect the best of the cultural and social setting of its location and time. All the hotels will look completely different from each other with the brand’s unifying aesthetics as the common factor. Design and architecture will be inspired from the scale, location and feel of the individual properties rather than from artificial decorative formulas.
Marriott also acquired the Seville Hotel in Miami Beach in early 2010 to redesign and redevelop it into an EDITION hotel. Marriott will open the brand’s second property, The Istanbul EDITION, in the first half of 2011.
The Berners Hotel was owned by JJW Hotels & Resorts. The hotel has been closed since 2006 and was placed in administration in August 2010.
