Renowned as a center of youth culture and fashion, the Shibuya Station area is getting a makeover. The new 34 story tower in Tokyo, Japan, constructed as part of the redevelopment of Shibuya Station, resembles a stacked-up pile of boxes with different shapes. A new subway station in the form of underground spaceship is currently under construction to offer a distinctly open feel to the station.
The rectangular tower sits on a columned base and soars skyward to several roofs. Though blocky in shape, the tower is different from a plain box-like shape. It resembles a pile-up of differently shaped boxes. The distinct shape of the structure offers the facade varying textures, as some parts recede as others pop out.
The lower half of the tower has a sectioned look, while the upper sections display a steep look. The facades are glazed with strong horizontal and vertical lines in places, giving it a modern appearance.
This 182 meter tall tower features four underground levels, which will function as parking as well as a link to the metro. The lower floors are designed to accommodate retail spaces, the eight floor will hold an academy for the arts, while the ninth will hold an exhibition hall. A garden theater with a 2,000-seat indoor theater will be featured on the 12th and 16th floors. The remaining floors are reserved as premium office space.
The tower is scheduled for a 2012 completion.
