The regeneration scheme designed by UK-based independent design practice LDA will see almost 4,000 new homes built on a 300 hectare Brownfield site in South Yorkshire.

The masterplan focuses on building a new sustainable, mixed-use community on the site of the former Orgreave Colliery and opencast mine. Complete with new homes, 21% of which will be affordable housing, public facilities and green spaces, Waverley will create a 9,000 strong population over the next 20 years. Adjoining commercial developments are expected to boost the local economy by creating around 4,900 jobs.

New roads and public transport facilities will link the new community with Rotherham and Sheffield and there will be more local links between the surrounding communities of Catcliffe, Treeton and Handsworth.

John Phillipps, project leader and partner of LDA Design says, “Sustainability has been a key element of the design and Waverley will set a very high bar for other development in the region to achieve. Transport, energy, flood risk, employment, innovative homes and facilities for leisure activities have all been carefully considered and addressed in the plans to make a truly sustainable community.”

The development of Waverley New Community is expected to commence during 2012. The Secretary of State will now decide whether or not to consider the schemes further, or confirm the council’s decision.
