The OLED materials, being pioneered by Lomox, have a wide variety of potential applications and when coated onto a film, could be used to cover walls creating a light-emitting wallpaper. This new product is expected to replace the need for traditional light bulbs. The company has been awarded a GBP454000 ($692,972 approx) grant by the Carbon Trust, a not-for-profit company, with the mission to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy.
The new unique wall covering from Lomox require a very low operating voltage, and can be powered even by solar panels and batteries. Another benefit of OLED wallpapers is that it can offer more natural looking light than other forms of lighting.
Designed as an interesting light source, these wall papers can also become a beautiful solution for wall decoration, suitable for any modern room design. Lomox will make the product available from 2012.
