Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’s refurbished lobby now features new upholstery, carpeting and furniture. All these interior pieces have been tastefully selected by Jeffrey Wilkes, who was behind the 2009 renovation of all the 338 guestrooms in the River Wing Building.

The design brief specified that the legendary ‘DNA’ of the 135-year-old hotel should be well preserved, along with blending modern interpretation on traditional themes. Distinctive elements of the hotel such as the grand floor-to-ceiling windows, the two royal elephants guarding the lift landing and the historical ‘temple bell’ chandeliers have been retained.

The decorative enhancements have been designed to blend well with the proud Thai history, displaying unique Thai-inspired flair and atmosphere. A unique lighting system has been installed to further enhance the interior design, which highlights the vibrant new colour scheme of burnt sepia, crimson reds and cool grays. Silver Naga and cream marble coffee tables are artfully placed throughout the seating arrangements, further enhancing the decor.

The reception counters have also received significant aesthetic makeovers. Modern Thai materials and fabrics are used to refurbish this area. Backlit blue glass tiled counters set beautiful contrast with the scarlet Thai silk on the walls and the crystal chandeliers adorned with Thai motifs suspended from the ceiling above the teakwood reception desks.

The Book Kiosk, the Spa and Wellness Reservation Desk, and the Oriental Corner Cake Counter have also received makeover with new luxury retail showcases been added.
