The new Barnsley College is located at Old Mill Lane. The eight-storey building consists of fully equipped classrooms, workshops, a centrally located Learning Resources Centre, IT suite, hair and beauty salons, training kitchen facilities, dance studios and a fully operational radio and TV studio.
The building has an atrium, which serves as a multi-functional area. The atrium has a refectory, a space to address students and parents and an area for College exhibition and presentation purposes.
The sustainable aspects of the building consist of orientation and passive solar design, solar shading, natural ventilation to the atrium, high performance glazing façades, occupant and/or daylight controlled switching, variable speed drives for fans and pumps, heat recovery systems (air to air), one touch water appliances, urinal flush controls and flow restrictors (water).
