The 600,000 square feet SSM St Clare Health Center is one of seven hospitals to win the honor from healthcare business news magazine Modern Healthcare. The masonry and natural lighting system has been admired by the publication. The use of materials inspired by the limestone bluffs of the Mississippi River Valley and the St Louis Red Brick buildings of the region attained special mention.

Designed by HGA Architects and Engineer, a spa-like atmosphere has been created inside the hospital based on the biophilic design concept. St Clare is considered to be one of the first healthcare facilities in the country to be built entirely around this concept of bringing nature indoors. The biophilic design is proven to be effective as patients suffer less stress and get better faster in a natural setting.

The entire facility is distinct with its floor-to-ceiling windows. The color palettes used throughout are carefully selected to complement the natural environment. A variety of art works are incorporated in the patients’ rooms.

The $236 million St Clare hospital has replaced the 54-year-old SSM St Joseph Hospital. Along with the main hospital, the 54 acre SSM St Clare has two medical office buildings, one that houses a cancer center, and the other an outpatient surgery center.

Run by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, SSM Health Care is one of the largest catholic health systems in the country.
