The new 700 square metre Tropical House will host the aviary’s Rainforest Experience attraction, with ponds and small animal enclosures linked to an indoor education centre. MSA has designed a triple polytunnel-like building with a three-arched roof made of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and a timber clad ground floor.

The tropical bird and primate house will offer a tropical environment without the tropical heat. Plants such as yuccas and palms that can cope with a slightly lower temperature will be planted in the Tropical House. The water pools will be heated to create humidity. A circular walkway will be featured that will lead visitors to walk at a gentle gradient of 1:20, rising slowly from the insects and reptiles of the jungle floor into the canopy, the home of parrots and small primates.

Zoo founder Steve Nichols has been reported stating that one of the main aims of the Rainforest Experience is to provide education. The centre will feature touch-screen pads giving information on birds and their natural habitats. The Tropical House will also feature week-long accommodation courses for avian vets. Parrots will be bred in the house with the zoo continuing to take in old birds from other zoos and bird parks.

Due to begin in October 2010, the building is the first part of a 2.7 hectare scheme on the Lincolnshire Fens. The Tropical House is due for completion in summer 2011 and is expected to cost GBP500,000 ($790,350). The sanctuary currently receives more than 30,000 visitors a year.
