The handcrafted mosaics can be fashioned into decorative borders, mural, floors, medallions. Pieces are cut and can be tumbled, honed, or treated to create distinctive styles, subtle shade variations, and textures. The product is the creation of initial ideas from customers and the creative genius of the new Ravenna designers.
History of New Ravenna Mosaics
The brainchild of Sara Baldwin, New Ravenna Mosaics has been offering one-of-a-kind mosaic tiles since 1991. With the inspiration deriving from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, which is extremely remote and full of artists and writers, gaining inspiration from the beautiful surroundings.
New Ravenna was born quickly after Sara visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art whilst at University. Mesmerized by the ancient Roman design of mosaics, the artist wanted to adapt this old technique to modern luxury design.
Through the years New Ravenna has grown to a 100 workforce strong company, and is the largest employer in the Northampton County in Virginia, USA.
Key Designers
Sara is drawing her inspiration from her surroundings as well as her world travel. She is constantly reinventing her art and technique. After a visit to Tunisia she was inspired to “age” the marble by using a special tumbling technique, giving the stone a smoother and softer feel).
“It is our constant thrill to be on the cutting edge of design, using both traditional stone-cutting mosaic methods and modern ones, such as the use of water-jet saws, which have brought us into a new era of stone and glass mosaic. I work with a great team of designers who never cease to amaze me; their love of the craft, and their resourcefulness are in perfect harmony with my own”.
