Part of the hospital’s Vision 2020 plan, the 70 hectare hospital site at the southern end of Cambridge City will now grow into a 140 hectare, self-contained township, placing Addenbrookes at the forefront of institutions that combine clinical care, teaching and research onto one site. The 2020 plan was announced 10 years ago to convert the site into a cutting edge, health-related services and enterprises in Europe.
The masterplan, completed by Allies & Morrison and a London-based practice, Devereux Architects, features extensive new clinical facilities, including a new children’s hospital expected to open by 2013; expanded services for maternity, neurosciences and cancer; and the relocated Papworth Hospital. It also includes research facilities like the new Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, where scientists can work to push the boundaries of medical knowledge.
The expansion plan of the Cambridge University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust, would have a working population of 17,000. The masterplan highlights a series of streets, promoting pedestrian activity as well as a strong visual identity through high-quality architecture, public spaces and landscaping. The Addenbrooke’s access road and the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway are being developed in conjunction with Cambridgeshire County Council and Cambridgeshire Horizons.
Partners in the development of the campus are Countryside Properties, Liberty Property Trust and the Pemberton Trustees.
