The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) has approved plans to redevelop the ground. Development plans shows reconfiguration of the playing surface and a remodeled western stand. The redevelopment would make the ground a viable option for hosting Australian Football League (AFL) games as well as international football and rugby.

The new design will retain many of the Adelaide Oval’s features, including the pavilion-style nature of the ground, the hill at the northern end and the century-old scoreboard. The Football Park, the traditional home of Australian Rules in South Australia and home ground for both the Port Adelaide Power and Adelaide Crows, will remain as a training and administration base only. The new stadium will also assist in Australia’s bid to host the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cups.

The current Adelaide Oval holds about 34,000 spectators with the three main grandstands, the Bradman Stand, named after Adelaide’s famous all rounder, the Western Wing and also the Chappell Stands. The Oval’s has conference facilities named ‘the Pavilion’ that can be divided into smaller rooms for conferences of functions of all types. The Adelaide Oval is also a popular tourist attraction.
