The proposed development will take place on a piece of land located to the west of Terminal 1 and between the two existing runways. Scope of work includes expansion of the Midfield Concourse and its adjacent apron area. The Midfield Concourse will be a five storey structure that will have a total floor area of 78,000 square feet. The apron area will offer parking space to 20 aircraft.
The other important aspects of the project include creation of an Automated People Mover (APM) extending from Terminal 1; a cross-field taxiway; and other ancillary facilities. The Midfield Concourse has been designed with strict compliance with environmentally friendly aspects.
The building will have more than 35 green features. AAHK plans to build the terminal to BEAM Plus Gold standards. The terminal will feature 1200 square metre of rooftop solar panels, the largest arrays of rooftop solar panels in Hong Kong, to harness renewable energy.
More than 80% of the lights in the concourse will be LED lights, which are highly energy efficient. The concourse will feature high-performance glazing panels, solar shading and north-facing skylights, which are likely to bring abundant natural light into the building and cutback solar heat gain. AAHK aspires to reuse 60% of the construction waste.
Upon commencement of operation, the Concourse will use recycled grey water, rain water and condensate water for the water-cooled chillers that are used in the air conditioning system. The APM system that will connect the Concourse to terminal 1 to support its operations will use the energy generated from braking.
After the completion of phase 1, the passenger handling capacity of the airport will be boosted by 10 million passengers per annum. The total capital outlay of the project is estimated to be HKD9 billion ($1.15 billion) and will create approximately 2000 jobs during construction. The work is scheduled for completion in 2015.
