Blackpool Gateway Academy is the first to be built in the Bloomfield ward, on a brownfield site close to the town’s football stadium.
The school has been designed as both a creative learning environment and a community hub.
With an elliptical shape, the curved design of the school is inspired from the coast.
It features a two-storey pitched roof that slopes in one direction and houses a central, double height atrium which provides a light and airy space.
The design of the school includes multi-use classrooms, with folding screens to allow learning environments to be linked together as required.
The school also features community spaces such as a hall, drama studio, football pitches, and an amphitheatre.
Children and staff have been involved from the beginning of the process, creating design ideas, choosing colour schemes and even selecting the name.
The building has been designed to accommodate upto 420 pupils and 60 staff.
The Blackpool Gateway Academy will fulfill the need for additional primary school places in the south of Blackpool.
The Academy has been completed six weeks ahead of schedule, and will open in September 2013.
The new academy building would be managed by the Blackpool Local Education Partnership (LEP), which is a public private partnership between EWC, Blackpool Council and Northgate Managed Services.
The building was handed over on 28 June 2013.
