The expanded and improved airport can now handle eight million passengers annually. The 31,301 square meters terminal, inspired by the ancient Kingdom of Lanna, features a new section for international passengers and an upgraded domestic wing.

The expansion project commenced in 2004 and comprised 14 individual projects. The projects were carried out in phases until the recent completion of construction.

Chiang Mai International Airport is the major gateway to the north of Thailand. As a result of the temporary closure of Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2008 due to the protests, Chiang Mai became the alternative stop-over for China Airlines’ Taipei-Europe flights and for Swiss International Airlines’ Singapore-Zurich flights in the interim.
