The modern terminal features extensive facilities including, eight entry gates from the city side for easy access, 72 check-in desks and 16 self check-in kiosks for quick check-in, a four-level in-line baggage system to eliminate baggage X-ray queues while enhancing safety.
The terminal features common use terminal equipment for optimum utilization of resources, 14 channels for smooth security clearance, and 15 gates for easy bus boarding with 11 boarding points. The spacious security hold area (SHA) features food and beverage, retail and recreation facilities at premium lounges managed by Plaza Premium to smoothen passenger experience. Toddlers can relax, enjoy their bottle of milk, or get their nappies changed for the long flights ahead in the special lobby inside the SHA. It also has WiFi facility.
The city side of the terminal has a special contact zone where customer care executives of Delhi International Airport (P) Limited (DIAL) can contact the concerned airline to ensure required assistance for unaccompanied minors, elderly and physically challenged.
DIAL is working in collaboration with a team of experts from Munich Airport to implement the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) program that prepares all internal and external stakeholders, such as airlines, ground handlers and CISF and service providers for the new terminal operations.
ORAT aims to build a bridge between the development team and the operations team, aligning user requirements and processes with design and vice versa. While the development team is responsible for building, testing and commissioning facilities and systems, the responsibility of the operations team lies in devising Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and work instructions for the smooth running of the terminal. ORAT aims to steer the project eventually into a period of trial operations before shifting of airlines and start of commercial operations.
Over 30 such trial sessions have been carried out in Terminal 1D over a period of four months to ensure that all components and processes at the terminal are checked and re-checked so that passengers have a smooth transit when the terminal opens for them. Staff from all areas of operations, have been exposed to the new working environment, baggage handling and IT systems.
