‘Lantern’ is an integral part of the architecture of the pavilion, standing on its own as a light sculpture. The glass shaft and the elevator car together create a centre piece for the main hall, which enhances the overall effect of the interior of the pavilion.

The Finland Pavilion ‘Kirnu’ is surrounded by a lake, appearing to float on the water. It features a slogan ‘Sharing Inspiration’, where ideas can meet and mix. The design draws inspiration from Finnish nature. Elements reinterpreted in the pavilion include the shape of small rocks found on coastal islands, the surface of a fish, reflection on water, framed view of the sky and smell of tar on wood.

The architecture of the exhibition is functional and clean and serves as a background to present art, design and high technology. The flooring of Finnish wood and illuminated snow-cave or cloud like structures in the air connects the spacial elements, along with one of the largest textile artworks in the world on the inner wall. The elements of balanced, sustainable and enjoyable urban-oriented life are presented in many aspects.

The construction materials and methods chosen for the construction are eco- friendly. A composite UPM ProFi- shingle based on recycled paper and plastic is said to be the most innovative construction material used in the pavilion. A total of 25,000 injection molded marble white scaly shingles are used for wrapping the outer facade of the pavilion.

Blue wall which is one of the largest textile art works in the world is displayed in the exhibition hall. A 100-square-meter sauna is also available at the pavilion which will introduce a typical Finnish sauna to VIP guests. Santa Claus, who delivers gifts to children all over the world, will also be available on certain days during Expo.

There are virtual guides on the large animated screen which will help the guests to understand the themes and stories. A total of 200 mobile phones will change their display colors in a reaction to the passing guest.

Finland attempts to capture the ideas of freedom, creativity, innovation, community, health and nature in its exhibition. The Exhibition Story extends through three spaces. The first area, ‘the Welcoming’ introduces essences of Finland as well as the Virtual Guide. The second area opens magical landscapes, attached to the foundations of Finland’s nature, national character, society, economy, education and culture. The third area is named ‘City of Dreams’, which is an interactive presentation of elements of Better Life as well as solutions and perspectives.
