Transformed into an affordable, sustainable urban living in 16 months, the home has also secured an additional efficiency certification from Energy Star Water Management System. The home has been tested in accordance with the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index, a nationally recognised scoring system for measuring a home’s energy performance.
The refurbishment of the home included various sustainable features. CertaSpray foam insulation is spray-applied into open wall cavities and ceilings to deliver greater efficiency, moisture management, sound control, structural integrity and improved indoor air quality. A high R-Value minimises hot and cold spots in a home to improve efficiency and comfort; and as a secondary moisture vapour barrier, it helps to reduce the risk of moisture intrusion in the wall cavity.
The home features Saint-Gobain’s Grenite engineered stone countertops, which feature 85% post-consumer recycled content, the highest currently available in the market. The countertops are manufactured locally in nearby Ravenna, Ohio.
Additional products which are used inside the Garfield Street home to enhance the indoor environmental quality include CertainTeed moisture and mold resistant Gypsum Board with M2Tech, which is specially engineered to provide enhanced protection against mold growth; and CertainTeed Type X Gypsum Board, which features a specially formulated core providing fire resistance ratings when used in tested assemblies.
For ceilings and tiles, the refurbishment has used Easi-Lite ½ inch Gypsum Board from CertainTeed, which is up to 30% lighter than standard gypsum board and can be used for both interior ceilings and walls. Its lightweight design enables quicker and easier installation, reducing strain and fatigue. It is designed with sag resistance, which makes it ideal for 1/2-inch ceiling applications, allowing for one board type to be used on the interior walls or ceilings.
For a healthier living, it has used AirRenew Gypsum Board from CertainTeed, which provides improved indoor air quality. It removes VOCs from the air and converts them into safe inert compounds. Once they are captured in the board, they cannot be released back into the air. The board also features M2Tech technology, which helps improve indoor air quality by providing enhanced moisture and mold resistance.
Apart from the interior, the exterior of the home has also been refurbished with sustainability. It has used CertaWrap weather resistant barrier, which adds a layer of protection against air and moisture damage. The Landmark Solaris solar reflective roofing shingles from CertainTeed contains advanced coloured granules that reflect the sun’s rays and can reduce a roof’s temperature by as much as 20% in the summer. It combines the traditional beauty of asphalt shingles with the ecological benefits of cool-roof technology.
