The total renovation project is estimated to cost $84 million, and is scheduled to open in 2010 as an acute care general hospital. The new hospital will feature the addition of state of the art operating rooms, nursing floors and imaging equipment, reconstructing pre-and post-surgery and recovery areas, and preparing space for new and innovative technology.

The hospital measures 244,000 square feet and is using a familiar “Mountains to Sea Trail” Orange County theme for its interior design. The 22 mile trail traverses the 93,000 acre Irvine Ranch from Weir Canyon to Upper Newport Bay. This trail inspired design elements such as the color palette of sage and taupe, and photographs taken along the trail will be incorporated throughout the hospital.

Sandford Smith, senior vice president of real estate and facilities for Hoag Hospital, said, “Using the ‘Mountains to the Sea Trail’ is a natural connection and the new hospital represents an opportunity to link Hoag’s Newport Beach facility and the sea, to Irvine and South County communities, and it represents connectivity.”

The health care center also plans to incorporate a number of green building practices throughout the renovation and will put energy use, air quality and recycling at the forefront when selecting options for demolition, materials selection and construction.
