“The Haptech Kitchen is a result of the way we sense things and how we, by sensing our surroundings, are led to self-reflection and acknowledgement of the social characteristics of the space. In this case, those characteristics address the situation, correlation and orientation of the space.

Haptic deals with human sensibility. The technological aspect of the Haptech Kitchen entails a challenge to the standard format and lay-out that characterises the majority of kitchens, which seem to be heavily influenced by the standards of the cabinets and by the size of appliances.
I wanted to propose a different, visually appealing shape for the kitchen, one which could be placed in any room, and which, by its technological and socially-orientated solutions offers a more human-friendly form,” explains John Sebastian.

“The three major functions are spread out in the “Haptech” kitchen. Firstly the functions for cooking and water, secondly the storage space and last the dining area. The wall cabinet
leaves space for primary storage, fridge and ovens. It was important that the Island had a light, organic shape so that it would blend into a room in a natural way.” adds John Sebastian.

John Sebastian has worked with DuPont Corian® in the past, developing in 2007 the elegant “Leaf” tray for the 40th Anniversary exhibition for Corian® and the “Verve chair” for a show at the Milan Bang & Olufsen store, during the 2008 Milan week of design.

“The unique design flexibility, the formability and the visual lightness of DuPont Corian® enabled me to turn the kitchen shape I was thinking about into reality. DuPont Zodiaq® I have used in a more three-dimensional way, to create a different kind of countertop. I think the soft, white, sensual matt finish of the surfaces in DuPont Corian® combines very well with the cool, black, shiny surface of the worktop in DuPont Zodiaq®.” concludes John Sebastian.

The kitchen is fabricated using DuPont Corian® (in the 12mm thickness Glacier White colour choice), adopting advanced CNC machinery and thermoforming techniques. The fabrication was undertaken by Swedish company Snickarbolaget. The countertop of the kitchen is made with DuPont Zodiaq® (in the 30mm thick Mystique Black colour choice), fabricated by the Swedish company Värnamo Glas, adopting advanced CNC equipment.

The “Haptech” kitchen installation also features:
– flooring made in DuPont Zodiaq® (colour: Concrete Grey), in 12 mm thickness, appropriate for flooring and wall-cladding
– 3m long wall clad with 6mm DuPont Corian® (colour: Glacier White), an example of the capabilities of this material to be used as wall cladding in both residential and commercial applications, in both indoor and outdoor environments.
– the new 966 sink in DuPont Corian®.
– tap made by KWC, introducing their EVE tap in DuPont Corian®.
– translucent cabinets made in DuPont Corian® Ice White.
– ATAG appliances, reflecting the unique design of the kitchen with their straight lines.

“The collaboration with creative minds has been and will always be very important for us, because it has contributed both to better understanding the possibilities of our materials and has given major inspiration to the whole industry. This innovative design of John Sebastian offers a great example of the potential of combining DuPont Corian® and DuPont Zodiaq®, in both technical and aesthetical terms. We are confident that the
innovative concepts and details designed by John Sebastian will prove to be a further powerful source of inspiration.” says Helle, Jensen, Area Manager of DuPont Corian® and DuPont Zodiaq® for Denmark, who has managed the development of the installation.

Kitchens with worktops in DuPont Corian® will also be featured at the stands of Tibrokök and Ballingslöv.
